Leon Cornelius' first five murders were experiments. He tried to develop a drug that would induce a heart attack in its victim. It was his hope that he could utilize this drug to wipe out every chire on the planet.
I guess in order for you to fully understand his goal you must first understand exactly what a chire is. More than half a century ago a scientist named Ivo Rich accidentally created the first chire. How he went about this...well its a very long, complicated, and tedious procedure, so I will only summarize the key points of chirism. A chire is a human whose DNA had been mutated. This mutation allowed certain features to take predominance over normal human traits. Often, a chire would exhibit features such as tails, whiskers, and other such things. More often than not, instead of the regular ears aside the head, they would be located elsewhere, usually on top of the head. Chires also had heightened senses of hearing, smell, taste, etc. Chires are completely compatible with other humans, so a chire and normal human can succsessfully create offspring, which is exactly why they have been able to thrive for so long. Proffesor Ivo coined the term "chire" by making an anagram of his last name and adding an E, though the name was officially changed to anthrochirism some time later.
Anyway, back to Leon's experiment.
First, he sedated his victim and tied them, before injecting them with a series of painful shots that, he hoped, would cause a heart attack. His victims never protested. They never had a chance to. However, after it was all said and done, his first experiment ended, sadly, in failure. After three hours of treatment, the victim convulsed and died soon after. Leon, though disappointed, was not at all surprised by this result. He knew better than to think he could develop such a complex drug so quickly. And he considered the importance of such a murder to be relatively low. In his mind, everything he did was done in the name of science, therefor, a death or two along the way meant nothing to him. Thinking back on his beliefs, I can only surmise that it was this exact thinking that ruined his family in the years to come. Smirking slightly, Leon disposed of the body and went about finding his next victim. Soon enough ge would succsessfully create the drug...
Leon Cornelius, though he was a deranged mad-man the end of his life, he had not always been like this. He had a bad upbringing, if you will, which is most likely the cause of the events that follow.
But first, before I tell his story, a few words.
Leon Allan Cornelius was not always an insane man. In fact, during his younger years, he was the most sane man I've ever known. We first met during his freshman year at Tokyo University, immediately after he graduated from the Emerald Academy. Though he came from a rather poor family, his superb mind earned him a reputation, and at one point he was even considered the smartest man alive, much like his children much later. During his yers at the academy, he developed a very morbid fascnination with chires. A fascnination that nearly landed him in a federal prison. When I first met him, he was a student in my class. His eyes shone with a fierce determination. To everyone's surprise, mine included, he would blow away the class with his superior mind. However, unless prompted in class, he pretty much kept to himself. It wasn't that he was shy, or any other kind of character flaw. I'll explain the reasons for his seclusion later, due to the fact that it impacted both of our lives greatly.
Him and I eventually became partners.
During my time working with him, he related to me five of his murder stories, which directly led to the whole incident at Emerald Academy. And it is because of that incident that I am writing this. The effect of the events at Emerald Academy is that common people are forced to read these notes in an attempt to better understand what happened.
The story of his first five murders are immensely important. To him, to me, and perhaps even to his own kids. Becuase...
Becuase that is when he succsessfully recreated a chire.
That is what began the story of Hiro.
Oh, and a final thought before I begin his story, I was the man who helped him when his life took a drastic turn for the worst, the man who stuck by him and was loyal to the very end, even if I knew it was wrong. During his life, there was only one time I ever opposed him, which, as I'm sure you're aware of, was that time at Emerald Academy, where I save the life of Hiro. I am the grandfather of Kari Dowers, who since then has graduated from the academy and is currently attending Tokyo University. My name is Miles Dowers, and this is the true story of Leon Cornelius.
Details concerning Hiro and his siblings, and Leon's followers and partners are brought to light later in the story, though they may even have something to do with me.
My memories are vivid, but full of nightmares.
