Kari sighed, stretching as she walked out of her room. There was a slight breeze today, sending a refreshing chill over the warm island. Since she had no classes today, she figured she’d busy herself looking for either Ryuzakai or Katherine. Surely, they’d provide some sort of entertainment.
As she left the red dorms, on her way to the blue, she passed the cliffs. A figure, which sat upon the boulder, caught her eye. She squinted, trying to make out who it was.
“Huh?”
It was Hiro. He sat upon the boulder, gazing out over the sea. But he was wearing his orange blazer and Breann was nowhere in sight. That was weird. Not so much that he was wearing his orange blazer, but because Bre wasn’t with him. Maybe something was wrong.
She sprinted off after him, a small smile on her face. It would be nice to have a normal conversation with him. No Breann. No Ryuzakai. Just her and Hiro.
“Hiro!” she exclaimed as she neared him. He didn’t answer, gave no sign that he had heard her. She stopped at the boulder, doubling over to catch her breath. When she looked up again, Hiro was on his feet, still gazing at the sea. “Hiro, is everything okay?”
He turned his head slightly, eyeing her expressionlessly. She smiled nervously; something was wrong. Slowly, he turned around and Kari flinched, taking a few steps back.
“What the hell?” she exclaimed, her eyebrows drawn together in confusion.
The man who stood before her wasn’t Hiro. He looked very similar though. His blonde hair was wild, like Hiro’s. He was about Hiro’s height, but lacked his muscular build. He wasn’t wearing the orange blazer anymore, rather he wore a while lab coat. His fierce blue eyes were set behind a pair of small, square, yellow-tinted sunglasses.
“Leon…what the hell are you doing here?” she asked angrily.
“I’m here to collect your debt,” he said, crossing his arms.
“D-dammit, stop…stop s-saying shit like…like that!”
“Wha—“ Kari whipped around to see Hiro knelt on the ground, glaring painfully past Kari and up at Leon. His hand clutched his chest, his breathing sharp.
“Oh, so you mean Ryuzakai didn’t tell you yet?” Leon asked, brushing his hair from his face.
“What’s going on?” Kari asked, fear welling up inside her chest. Suddenly, her vision blurred and she fell to her knees, clasping her head in her hand.
“You seem shocked, Hiro. Or are you just scared?”
“Hiro, who is this man?”
Kari glanced behind her, only to find, to her horror, herself where Hiro was a moment before, looking confused and scared. But how? She was on the ground; how could she be right there too?
“That man…he’s…he’s my…” Kari shouted out as a flash of pain seared through her head. She cried out as Hiro’s voice and words left her mouth. Each syllable sent a fresh wave of pain through her skull.
“Listen, we just want to change the situation!” Ryuzakai shouted.
Leon and Ryuzakai began to slowly circle Kari, who gritted her teeth painfully. They each glared angrily at the other.
“You traitor! Get the hell out of my way!” Leon spat furious, his demeanor no longer calm.
“Leon, let her go!”
“Kari Ann Dowers, unfortunately for you, this will continue. I have yet to show you the true horror of who I am!”
“Kari, go!” Hiro barked angrily from behind her.
“Hiro, wait!” the other her shouted in front of her.
“Kari, who are you?”
“I…” Kari gasped, falling the ground, clutching her head tightly. “I’m…I’m me!”
“ ‘I’m me?’ “ Ryuzakai mocked. “A fake like you could never get away with saying something like that.”
“That’s not true! I…I—“
“You’re not fit to exist!”
“No, I…”
“Or have you forgotten?” Leon shouted. “Have you forgotten what you did? You were the one who killed your mother!”
“No!” Kari screamed in agony as everything went dark.
